I hate spam. I also don’t particularly enjoy being treated like a data point by websites I’ve never heard of.
This website is intended to be useful without collecting more information about you than is reasonably necessary. If you choose to give me your information, I will use it for the purposes described below and not for anything else.
Who I am
This website is operated by Kris Cannon, an independent data analyst and author based in Ontario, Canada.

What information I collect
The information I collect depends on how you use the site.
If you contact me
If you use the contact form, I may collect the information you choose to provide, such as your name, email address, and the contents of your message.
I use this information to respond to your enquiry and, where appropriate, to follow up on a request for professional services, writing-related questions, events, or other matters you have contacted me about.
I do not use information submitted through the contact form to add you to a mailing list without your consent.
If you subscribe to the newsletter
If you choose to subscribe to my newsletter, I collect the information necessary to send it to you, normally your email address and any preferences you choose to provide.
The newsletter may include:
- a newsletter-exclusive short story or ebook;
- a monthly editorial that does not appear on the public blog;
- early or first notice of books, preorders, releases, events, appearances, and other news;
- a roundup of recent posts from Kris’ Desk; and
- occasional personal or professional updates.
You can unsubscribe at any time using the unsubscribe link included in every newsletter.
I am currently selecting a newsletter service provider. Once that decision has been made, information about the provider and how it processes subscriber information will be added to this policy.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, this site receives some basic technical information when you visit it, such as your IP address, browser type, operating system, and information contained in normal web-server logs.
This information is primarily used by the web hosting and security systems to operate, maintain, and protect the website.
I do not use this information to build individual advertising profiles.
Website analytics
This website uses Independent Analytics to understand how visitors use the site, such as which pages and posts are visited and how people arrive at the site.
Independent Analytics is designed to operate without cookies and without storing personally identifiable information. Analytics data is stored on this website’s own server rather than being sent to an external analytics company.
Analytics are used to understand what is useful to readers and to improve the website. They are not used to identify individual visitors.
How I use your information
The short version is: only for the reason you gave it to me.
If you contact me, I use your information to respond to you.
If you subscribe to my newsletter, I use your information to send you the newsletter and manage your subscription.
If information is necessary to operate, secure, maintain, or improve this website, it may be processed for those purposes.
I do not use your information for unrelated marketing.
I do not sell it.
I do not rent it.
I do not trade it.
I do not sell or share subscriber lists.
I will not hand your information to another company because someone offered me money for it.

Email and communications
My email is provided through Proton, a privacy-focused email service.
I do not use your contact information to send unsolicited marketing, and I do not add people to my newsletter simply because they have contacted me.
If you email me or use the contact form, I will treat your information as correspondence, not as permission to market to you.
Cookies
This website may use cookies or similar technologies where they are necessary for WordPress, security, forms, or other essential website functions.
Independent Analytics does not require tracking cookies.
Third-party services embedded or linked on the site may have their own cookie and privacy practices. Those services are responsible for their own policies.
Who receives your information
I do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
Information may be processed by service providers that are necessary to operate the website and services connected to it. These may include:
- Web Hosting Canada (WHC), which provides website hosting and related infrastructure;
- Fluent Forms, which processes information submitted through website forms;
- Wordfence, where its security services process information necessary to protect the website;
- a newsletter service provider, once selected, which will manage newsletter subscriptions and send newsletter messages; and
- other service providers where reasonably necessary to operate, maintain, secure, or improve the website.
These providers receive only the information reasonably necessary for the service they provide.
Some service providers may store or process information outside Canada. Where this occurs, the information may be subject to the laws of the jurisdiction in which it is processed.
I will update this policy when a newsletter provider is selected so that its specific privacy and data-handling practices are identified.
How long I keep information
I keep personal information only for as long as it is reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, or as required by law.
Contact-form messages may be retained for as long as necessary to respond to an enquiry, maintain appropriate business records, or resolve a subsequent matter.
Newsletter information is retained while you remain subscribed, unless there is another legitimate reason to retain it.
You may ask me to delete personal information where there is no legal or legitimate reason for me to retain it.
How I protect your information
Reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards are used to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, disclosure, or alteration.
The website is hosted on managed infrastructure and uses security measures appropriate to the nature of the information collected.
I also deliberately limit the amount of personal information I collect in the first place. Not having information I don’t need is one of the better ways of protecting it.
No method of transmitting or storing information online can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
Your choices and rights
You can choose not to provide personal information, although doing so may prevent me from providing certain services or responding to particular requests.
If you have provided personal information to me, you may ask:
- what personal information I hold about you;
- how that information is being used;
- where it came from, where applicable;
- who it has been disclosed to, where applicable;
- that inaccurate information be corrected; or
- that information no longer required for its original purpose be deleted.
You may also withdraw consent to the collection, use, or disclosure of your personal information, subject to legal or contractual requirements and reasonable notice.

Children
This website is not directed specifically at children, and I do not knowingly collect personal information from children for marketing purposes.

Once you leave kmcannon.ca, the privacy practices of the other website apply. I am not responsible for the privacy practices or content of third-party websites.
